Bio:

Etari grew up in a small trading outpost of the Assani empire under the jurisdiction of his parents in the burning isle, Bael Turath. The Assani hoped to use this as a staging port to restrict the flow of trade coming from the cursed place in the hopes of restricting the amount of illegal magic coming in from Bael Turath. Etari first showed signs of magical development when, as a child, he imbued a small mechanical construct he made with life. This small mechanical friend he named Simon. His parents seeing this development sent him off to the Assani empire to be schooled in the ways of artificing in the hopes of him living the life of a respected and noble profession instead of becoming another subject for witch hunts. After excelling at many of his studies as an artificer Etari began wanting to know more of arcane magics and tried to find methods of study that would not be suspicious, and eventually came to a tome that pointed to the forbidden continent as the solution. The book pointed to a magic lock that kept arcane energy from entering the world effectively, and that it could be opened, but at an untold price. In the hopes of learning more before heading to the forbidden continent, after graduating from the artificer’s college of Assani, Etari wandered for years trying to find more research. Eventually Etari signed to become the master artificer of an elven merchant prince, Yassan, who had come to Assani to negotiate several trade contracts. Yassan had promised information about the continent that the elves had exclusive access too, but would only allow trusted people to know what little the elves could uncover. Etari worked many years for the merchant prince, but he only viewed Etari as a court jester with the ability to create wonders for the people of his court to fawn over. Etari resented this, but the merchant prince would not allow his contract to be broken. Etari attempted to free himself by making some small constructs to help him escape. Yassan found out, however, and attempted to implicate Etari of working with forbidden magic. Etari was nearly burned at the steak by an angry elven mob if it were not for Simon. Simon was small enough so that he fit inside of Etari’s cloak, and Simon was armed with a small knife he used to cut the ropes binding Etari to the steak. With a little luck, a small display of arcane wonders, and stealth, Etari managed to avoid becoming another in a long line of artificers burned at the steak by their unappreciative lord. Once he reached human lands again Etari quickly hired himself to a noble house in need of an artificer for exploration of the forbidden continent in the hopes of unlocking this magic seal.

10 Minute Background: Step 1: Etari is not afraid of arcane magic. While many artificers treat the arcane power source as something that must be respected, Etari keeps trying to push the boundaries of the science. He could be compared to some of the great thinkers of the rennisance who realized there were certain unfounded fears about science, but pushed on beyond the comfortable boundaries that religion and society had set. Etari’s family was made of minor nobles. He had loving parents who enjoyed their son for ten or so years before he displayed signs of magical aptitude. Since the family was in charge of an outpost on a continent where superstition and hatred abound due to the taint of the tieflings, he was sent off for his own protection. Etari understands this and knows his parents made the safe, correct choice, though he has not been able to contact them since he graduated. Due to his past Etari resents people above his station. While he does not mind minor nobles, he does resent people like Yassan with money and influence. He believes that having such a high life breeds laziness, incompetence, but above all else contempt for the people who are not at that station. Etari would try to get along with guards, settelers, farmers, or merchants and business men, but may be slightly hostile to a prince or high priest, thinking they might only try to waste his time. He does understand the worth of not being rude to an employer however and can hide this resentment for the sake of doing good work. Etari, while motivated to finish his own goals will not betray the party for the information. Whatever is lurking in the wilderness may be powerful enough to warrant having powerful allies. Etari is always either tinkering or exploring. He enjoys finding new sites, and loves travel, but in his workshop he explores the boundaries of arcane magic that he is allowed to. He believes that by exploring both outside his body, and within his mind he will learn more about arcane magic. Notes: He does know about his brother, he just has never met his brother. Etari was taken to college at 10, went to school for 5 years, explored for 7, and was in the employ of Yassan for another 7. This would make Etari 29.

Step 2: Etari realizes that having magical aptitude means being under constant threat of being discriminated against. Creating a school on the continent that could be essentially a prep school for artificer’s college would be a great hope of his. Repairing his name by getting Yassan to tell the truth, or defeating him in some sort of combat for honor would help make sure that his family was not hurt by Etari’s misdeeds. There is something great and powerful on the continent and Etari is willing to travel and go through as much trouble as he must to find out what that is. Along with this Etari wants to explore to find this artifact. He is not daunted by the task, and he wants this knowledge to become accessable to all who would be interested. Etari would love to become a great cartographer of the new continent.

Step 3: Etari’s main goal is to find out what this arcane power source is that rests in the forbidden continent. He is very interested in better understanding what exactly it is. No one knows this is his main goal because he understands the fear that many place in arcane magic. Etari actually does have some primordial taint that gives him his magical aptitude. While this has not manifested itself in any way other than his arcane skill, he could have been called to the forbidden continent by these primordial powers hoping that he will free them.

Step 4: Could Yassan have set up an outpost of his own on the forbidden continent? Are the elves after something of their own? If Etari finds Yassan there he may have to go out of his way to clear his name. Etari has a brother. His brother was born after he left for Artificer’s college and has continued to oversee the family’s tiny trading post since his parents died which has prospered and built quite a nice fortune. Etari’s brother Donallo has a quick wit to match his fast sword and has his eyes set on expanding his tiny trade empire through creating his own outpost on the forbidden continent and making a supply post. Donallo is friendly toward his brother, and is interested in reuniting with him. Donallo is 19.

Step 5: Describe three memories that your character has. They don’t have to be elaborate, but they should provide some context and flavor. Etari still remembers the dusty tome that he found in the library. It was the first time he felt that he had a purpose. As he thumbed through the tome he found out about the strange occurrences in the last unexplored place on earth and decided he had to find out what was there While he wants to further arcane science, Etari is still afraid of burning at the steak. Before he was sent to artificer’s college he had a tutor that would teach him everything. This man soon became a close mentor and friend to the young Etari. The kindly old tutor was found practicing forbidden magic in town and was burned as a witch for it. Etari still remembers the cries for help from his beloved teacher, but could only stand by as the mob lit the flames. Etari remembers first creating his original tiny construct, Simon. Etari had fit together several trinkets, and attached them with metallic wire. He then simply willed his toy to life and Simon began moving around. This gave quite a fright to several servants who saw, and when word reached his mother and father they realized that their son must go to artificer’s college to prevent any future problems.
